Research

Claude BARON currently performs research at the LAAS-CNRS laboratory in Toulouse. She has a multi-disciplinary background.

Over the last twenty years, she has been conducting research in the area of systems engineering, which includes model based systems engineering, design, modeling but also project management and engineering design.

She delt with topics such as: systems engineering and project management processes integration, systems engineering management, systems/software engineering processes including requirements engineering, product and process modeling, agility, software qualimetry, performance evaluation, critical software certification, continuous integration and safety assessment, or obsolescence management.

Her research interests mainly focus on processes alignement and on model-based collaborative engineering and decision support. She is also interested in improving systems and software development processes, considering model driven approaches and in improving software quality and safety. She recently got interested in obsolescence and obsolescence management, considering its technical, ecological, societal and philosophical dimensions.

Scientific recognition

Claude has contributed to 7 books, authored or co-authored over 50 journal articles, more than 200 conference papers, and several technical reports. She has served on numerous program committees and has co-chaired two IEEE conferences. In addition, as an expert, she has reviewed research proposals submitted to different research agencies and industrial projects.

She is actively involved in promoting research and applied research. She has organized and participated to national and international forums, workshops and conferences. She was invited or keynote speaker in 10 international conferences. She gave interviews to popularize sciences and research, and to promote women in sciences. She also was the principal or co-principal investigator of over 20 research projects. She supervised more than 30 PhD and post-doctoral students.

Expertise

She serves as Associated Editor for international peer-reviewed journals, including Systems Engineering journal. She is a member of AFIS, INCOSE, IEEE, AFNOR.

She also serves as an expert for national and international organizations (ECOS, Chinese Science Academy, European Science Foundation, Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Canadian Research Council CRSNG...). She is regularly solicited as a consultant for industrial projects (Star Engineering, Bpifrance...). As a Cti commission expert, she participes to French Universities evaluation campaigns. She is also a member of an expert committee of the French Research Agency (ANR).

Awards

Claude Baron received several awards for her publications, including IEEE Young Researcher Award (1994), INCOSE best paper (2012) and Wiley journals Top Cited Article (2022).

The International Council on Systems Engineering awarded her the prestigious distinction of INCOSE Fellow in 2022.
